You are having Social Studies Test on Thursday - 12/3/09. CA2 It is on Good Governance and it's going to be source-based again. Still trying to drill you on how to make inference and comparison. CA3 next term will be an essay question. Likely to be within the 1st two weeks.
2.1 - Anticipate change and stay relevant ANSWERS 1. This is evident in Source A, which states that “we need to be open to new ideas, and to keep questioning old assumptions, and never be trapped in the past … given the pace and scale of change facing all countries.” This is evident in Source A, which states that in the future, governments need “to cope with new issues that are complex and many-sided.” 2. It benefits Singapore by, … § Ensuring self-sufficiency in water supply so that the basic needs of its people would be taken care of even after Malaysia stops supplying water to Singapore in 2061. § Ensuring that its industries would continue to function and grow without having to worry about water shortages. This is because many factories require water to help cool its machines and to manufacture its products. Without NEWater, Singapore may, … § Have to continue depending on other countries to provide basic needs for its people. This would not reflect well on the government for the people may perceive this as a failure on the government’s part. § Experience slow growth in its industries, since factories are unable to operate smoothly due to water shortages. In the long term, this would adversely affect Singapore’s manufacturing industry and its economy. 3. It benefits Singapore by, … § Ensuring that Singapore stays ahead of other competitors in the tourism industry and allowing it to capture a huge share of the tourism pie. § Helping to create more jobs and new business opportunities for the people, thus, sustaining Singapore’s economy in the long term. Without the Integrated Resorts, Singapore may, … § Loose out to other countries in the increasingly competitive race towards attracting tourists to visit Singapore. § Experience a severe decline in its revenue and a slowing down of its economy as more and more tourists choose to spend their money elsewhere. In the long term, Singaporeans in the tourism industry may even risk loosing its jobs and business.
Hi Hope 3-1A. Can you please do your corrections at home so that we don't have to waste time copying in class. Answers to Assignment 2.1 - Governance in Singapore. Study 1. Source A. What does the source tell you about the benefits of having a set of principles in governments? [5] Source A tells me that having a set of principles would, …enable a government's effectiveness (Inference) This is evident in Source A, which states that “Successful governance must have at its core a set of principles or values that are enduring and relevant to the people living in that society.” (Support) This implies that if a government follows an infallible set of guidelines, it will not fail at performing its duties. (Explanation) Source A also tells me that having a set of principles would help the government to make right decisions at all times (Inference). This is evident in Source A, which states that “Strategies and tactics may change, but principles are anchors that give governments a firm footing even in uncertain or turbulent times.”(Support) This means that as long as the government abides to a set of good guidelines it sets for itself, it would be able to serve the nation well in whatever situation/ regardless of the situation.(Explanation) 2. Study Source B. What does the source tell you about the qualities of leadership that a country should look for? [5] Source B tells me that a country should look for leaders who have foresight and can encourage and move Singaporeans into success. (Inference)This is evident in Source B, which states that “a convincing vision that will inspire Singaporeans and mobilise them to achieve their best for the country.” (Support)This means that a country may lack behind in terms of development when they lack a visionary leader. (Explanation) Source B also tells me that a country should look for upright and righteous leaders who are willing to admit their mistakes and stay relevant to society. (Inference)This is evident in Source B, which states that "We need leaders who will do what is right, and not necessarily what is popular. They must have the moral courage and integrity to acknowledge and correct past mistakes, and recognise when an existing policy has outlived its usefulness and must be discarded or changed." (Support) This means that leaders must be willing to make changes and keep up with the times. (Explanation) 3. Study Source B. In your opinion, what are the consequences if ‘good leadership’ is absent in a country? Explain your answer. [5] In my opinion, the country will certainly not progress far. A good leader must have the moral courage and integrity to make the right decisions. Without which, there will be instability and corruption. Secondly, good leaders must anticipate change and stay relevant in society. An absence of the quality may also result in the country becoming backward and lacking behind others. Next, a good government rewards people according to their hard work regardless of race, language and religion. If not, there may be inequality and injustice. Finally, the country will not be effective if the government do not make the people feel a sense of belonging to the country.
the fifth level is where we stand. 25 students in a class full of wonder.
we are from different aspects of life. yet, fate brought us together and made us stronger.
we are never strong to begin with, BUT what makes us special is that
WE BELIEVE!
